Going Out Of Business

United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten has been overwhelmingly re-elected to a fourth full term by a nearly 9-to-1 margin. Weingarten and her running mates captured every seat at stake in the union-wide election, according to results tabulated late Thursday by the American Arbitration Association.
Of 46,735 votes cast for president, Weingarten received 40,665 or 87%, while her opponent, Kit Wainer, received 6,070, or 13%. Weingarten has been the UFT president since 1998, when she was appointed to fill the remainder of Sandra Feldman’s term shortly after Feldman became president of the UFT’s parent union, the American Federation of Teachers. She was re-elected in 1999, 2001 and 2004.
“I am honored that our members decided overwhelmingly to allow me to serve another term in office. Our members are the most incredible people I know – be they teachers, paraprofessionals, guidance counselors, therapists, nurses and others -- and it is an honor and privilege to champion their needs and aspirations,” Weingarten said.
“In the next three years we will be working with parents and others to help all children succeed. When we fight to enable educators to do their jobs effectively – and get the respect and conditions and professionalism they need -- we are doing nothing more than fighting to give our students the opportunities they so richly deserve.”

20,000 of Weingarten's votes came from retirees. She got around 12,000 (or less) out of the potential 70,000 teachers working in elem, ms, and hs.
Kit got around 4,000 or so. These are the numbers that count, though dismal for everyone - though ICE/TJC were the only ones to rise (not by much in total figures, but more significant as a %.) About 36% of HS, 20% of MS (though a joke in that only 2200 out of 13,000 voted.) There is a potential base though small. If ICE and TJC start working now they might make a dent next time. But they need all the help they can get.

The message is clear. The membership of this union wants the Randi/Unity team to run this union. Don't start posting all kinds of stats to try and prove otherwise. If people didn't want Unity to stay in power they would have voted ICE/TJC but they didn't. Yes I know apathy, blah, blah, blah. It's time to come to terms with reality. The members of this union don't want us, they don't want ICE or TJC, they love Unity. Thats the bottom line. Period end of story. It looks like this union is not worth saving, because not many people really care anyway. The membership gets what they deserve. When you here people who didn't support the opposition in this election complaining about working conditions, or salaries or whatever, just tell them to shut the fuck up.

The results were really no surprise to anyone. The erosion of teachers rights will continue we must acknowledge the voice of the majority.
Those individuals who did not vote in essence cast their vote for Unity.
The issue of union Democracy is apparently more important to some of us than others.

Although a few people in my school voted for Unity most voted for ICE because it supported many of the issues raised by the utp.
In the next election will the utp be represented on an opposition slate?

Unless of course we all want to have an epic happy "kool-aid" party.

Seriously, does ICE even serve a real purpose other than to drive a wedge within our union? Has ICE ever accomplished anything worthy of mention? And no, a sham presidential candidate in the last election, shoddy quality YouTube films, and heckling during the Delegate Assembly doesn't count.
