BOXCAR AND LIL' JIMMY
THE UTP PROUDLY PRESENTS
BOXCAR STEViE AND Lil’ jimmy
FLAP JAWING TALES O’ CORRUPTION, greed and power grabbing by the UNITY caucus~
Our little story begins with two former NYC teachers, now hobos because of the Pataki 25/55 veto, sitting by the side of the old Erie Lakawana tracks somewhere in northwestern Pennsylvania. Autumn is approaching. The first cold winds of the season blow down from Canada and across Lake Erie. They fondly remember the warmth and security of their 6R assignment outside the bathroom. Their conversation is typical of those that the UFT has forgotten, those that don't have a double pension.
Jimmy: So STEVIE, WHEN RANDI got over
on
how dem district rep’s ARE PLACED, HOW’D IT HAPPEN?
STEVIE: WELL, IT GOES BACK A LONG way. THE UFT THOUGHT THEY WAS GONNA HAVE A BIG RUN IN WITH THE NEW MAYOR AND THE NEW DOE. ‘COURSE DEY WAS RIGHT ‘BOUT DAT. So the executive bd. Voted to give the president the right to appoint the dr’s .
Jimmy: but what about checks and balances, and preventing the abuse o’ power. Ya know, My pappy used to say absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Stevie: course he did.
Jimmy: And it should come as no surprise to you then that the Executive bd is made up almost entirely of unity followers. Lock -step followers. Soldiers, of a sort. Yes-men--you get my meanin’?
So they gave the president something that in a way wasn’t theirs to give: the right o f chapter leaders and members even to elect their representatives.
It’s a basic fundamental right, of course, and just one of many examples of unity abuse o’ power.
the fact that there is no one to prevent them from doin’ anydamnthing they like--like giving away something to the President dat she aint ever gonna feel
like givin’ back--is sump thin that has to change.
It’s a dang dictatorship at dis point.
Stevie: lordy, dat sounds tantamount to collusion to me. Dat executive bd needs to be seen to, if you get my meaning.
Jimmy: yer right. Its just like getting hit I’ d’ head wif sump thin. Its totalitarianism
And dem unity folk collaborated on it.
Stevie: goddamit nothing’ seems to change. It the same thing over and over. I bet they can vote demselves a raise too. I cantstandit no more. It makes me so mad! well anywho , jimmy, I gotsta calm down . I'm gonna put some neatsfoot oil on my 2nd basemans glove. It helps me relax, but Tell me again about whats it like to be DR, ya know, like ya always tell....
But Jimmy starts with a song:
"My heart begin to roam around and I begin to sing,
If that freight train goes through this town, I'll catch it on a wing;
I pulled my cap down over my eyes and stepped up to the track,
I caught the stirrup of an empty car but never did look back."
Both look up at the first night stars and wonder. They wonder what it would be like if their union really represented them....

Commical as always but what can be done to give the vote back to the members(or is it the chapter leaders?)
I always love a good story! That lil Jimmy guy is soooo cool!! What can be done is... introduce a motion to the Unity dominated DA so they can vote on having DR's elected by the membership. First a non-Unity delegate would have to be recognized to introduce the motion, hmmmmm. Then the Unity lackies that make up the DA would have to vote yes hmmmmmm. Or an amendment to the UFT constitution with somewhere around 15,000 signatures. As always Unity is against anything that would increase democracy in our union... I wonder why? Maybe they really do know what's best and we should just shut up like they say. Or not.
That sounds like something "snakehead" would say!!
With the way things are going with the contractual givebacks I can foresee a future where retired teachers will find their reduced pensions sufficient to buy the cloth bindle needed to carry their meager possessions when they hit the rails.
Migrant teachers will flood the country looking for work and hand outs. There will be hobo "teacher towns" springing up like mushrooms beside the railroad yards and I'm sure if Unity isn't too preoccupied with solving the worlds problems they'll send in their pool cue wielding goons to disperse the crowd. It's enough to darken a persons soul but maybe a guy doesn't have a soul of his own anyway. Maybe we're all part of a big soul and if thats the case then I'll always be around. Whenever a guys trying to meet his bills and pay for his health insurance while other guys get two pensions- I'll be there. Whenever a lady is sitting in a freezing hallway outside a bathroom on 6R- I'll be there. Whenever a guy is sitting in the rubber room without knowing why-I'll be there. Whenever there's a movement too reform our union-I'll be there too.
With a little over a week and a half left of summer vacation my thoughts turn to the comforting prospect of staff development and the longest school year on record. I would like to thank our union leadership for securing this change for us.
Tell me again about the contract, Leo.
Well, we're going to have UFT jobs with two salaries and two pensions. And you get to tend the rabbits.
Maybe we should all be talking about whats right in our contract. Sitting outside a bathroom gives us opportunities to meet new and exciting people we otherwise would had never spoken to. Coming back early from vacation gives us a chance to 1) develop our professional skills by sitting in mind numbing meetings all day and 2) a longer school year means more time to contemplate what it would be like if we had a real union. Ya gotta take the bad with the bad, after all its not like our union leaders get paid huge salaries or have double pensions or anything... I mean we get what we pay for. Don't we?
I saw Randi last spring on Broadway. She seemed to be in a hurry to do something important but she took the time to stop and kick a dog.
Don't forget the free chapter leader training the UFT is holding for newbies on the 2 days BEFORE they get to go back early.
And what training it will be: all teh great things in the contract. And so simple - no worries about grieving letters in the file. No Step 2's. No real defense for all the non-tnured teachers to worry about since that can just be fired (and abandoned by the UFT a second time when they are no longer UFT members.) The contract was a win-win.
Just think of the advantages for these new CL - 4 days of bliss. And no worries about coming back into town in Labor Day traffic. Maybe they'll be lucky in the next contract when Unity gives back Labor Day.

The problem with you hobos is you don't know how to promote yourselves. It's easy to move ahead in the UFT. Just follow this example.
You'll be in a cozy UFT office in no time, pretending to work an extra hour a week, while your colleagues tend to potty patrol.
Maybe so.
But who will teach me to write such scintillating prose with a purple pen?
We are all just rank and file teachers, you know, not gods!
That Ron is even greater than Leo! I actually got to the second paragraph before I swooned with the vapors.
Hail the double pension!
First, you're gonna need a thesaurus. I can see right away, Johny, that you don't yet have what it takes.
For one thing, I understood every word you wrote. How on earth do you expect to bamboozle anyone, let alone the Unity elite, if people actually know what you're talking about?
Despite your mockery, i think Chapter Leader training is good thing.
Sure. CL training for three weekends at a non-union hotel in Princeton, with all you can eat and drink, and then retire to your room.
Dues money well spent, for sure!
